The oldest corner of Paris — and the most alive

The Marais is where medieval lanes, grand seventeenth-century mansions and the city's most exciting boutiques all share the same block. It's a real neighbourhood: a morning market, a café that learns your order, art galleries and falafel counters side by side. And it's wonderfully central — the Seine, Notre-Dame and Place des Vosges are all a short stroll away, yet you sleep like a local.

If you have one day

A perfect day in the Marais

If you only do one thing with my advice, do this.

  1. Start slow. A coffee and a warm croissant, then the morning light on the quiet streets before the shops open.
  2. Wander Place des Vosges. Sit under the arcades, then slip into the Musée Carnavalet or the Musée Picasso.
  3. Lunch like a local. Something small and excellent — then browse Rue des Rosiers and Rue Vieille du Temple.
  4. Down to the river. Cross to Île Saint-Louis for the best ice cream in Paris and a view of Notre-Dame.
  5. Apéro, then dinner. A glass somewhere golden-lit, and a table I'll happily book for you.
